Context
Taking cognisance of reports that certain electors in one State have voter ID numbers matching those issued in another State, the Election Commission on Sunday said that irrespective of the number on the elector photo identity card (EPIC), a person could vote only at the designated polling station in the constituency in a State or Union Territory where he or she was enrolled.
The EC, however, said it would remove the duplication and ensure that each voter got a unique number. The 10-digit number is printed on the ID card issued to each elector.
In a statement, the commission said: “It is clarified that while EPIC numbers of some of the electors may be identical, the other details including demographic details, Assembly Constituency and polling booth are different for the electors with the same EPIC number”
EPIC number
The Electronic Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is an official government-issued identification card in India. It is issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to all Indian citizens who are 18 years of age or older.
The EPIC serves as proof of identity and citizenship, and it is used to verify the identity of an individual when they are exercising their right to vote.
