Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Mithila Makhana.

Mithila Makhana, simply known as 'makhan', is a variety of aquatic fox nut

It is cultivated in the Mithila region of Bihar and some parts of Nepal

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

Once a product gets this tag, any person or company cannot sell a similar item under that name. This tag is valid for a period of 10 years following which it can be renewed.

The GI tag is awarded by the Geographical Indications Registry which is under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The other benefits of GI registration include legal protection to that item, prevention against unauthorised use by others, and promoting exports.

There are 13 other products in Bihar has GI tag includes Magahi Paan, Mithila painting, Jardalu varieties of mangoes from Bhagalpur, shahi litchi of Muzaffarpur and Silao Khaja of Nalanda, etc.

Karnataka has the highest number of GI tags i.e. 47 products followed by Tamil Nadu (39).
