Why is in news? PM pays tribute to Nari Shakti on International Women’s Day
International Women's Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
IWD is one of the most important days of the year to:
celebrate women's achievements
educate and awareness raise for women's equality
call for positive change advancing women
lobby for accelerated gender parity
fundraise for female-focused charities
The United Nations Observance of IWD for 2023, under the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, recognizes and celebrates the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.
Everything currently goes through a digital process. However, 37% of women do not use the internet. 259 million fewer women have access to the Internet than men, even though they account for nearly half the world's population.
The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1975, which had been proclaimed the International Women's Year.
