Why is in news? Govt. proposes to revamp National Informatics Centre
The government is now looking to revamp and restructure the National Informatics Centre (NIC) — it is the technology arm — to help the organisation keep pace with the growing need for digital technologies in the country.
The Centre has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for selection of a consultant for NIC’s organisational restructuring.
National Informatics Centre (NIC): It is an Indian government department under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The NIC provides infrastructure, IT Consultancy, IT Services including but not limited to architecting, design, development and implementation of IT Systems to Central Government Departments and State Governments thus enabling delivery of government services to Citizens and pioneering the initiatives of Digital India.
NIC was established in the year 1976 with the objective to provide technology-driven solutions to Central and State Governments.
Mandates of NIC: Technology partner of the Government, Design and Develop IT Systems for the Government, Provide ICT Infrastructure to the Government, Explore & Advise on use of Emerging Technologies.
NIC has been closely associated with the Government in different aspects of Governance besides establishing a Nationwide State-of-the-Art information and communication technology (ICT) Infrastructure.
It has also built a large number of digital solutions to support the government at various levels, making the last-mile delivery of government services to the citizens a reality.
