The seminar is being organized to examine the functioning of the Armed Forces Tribunal.
It is being conducted as a part of Raising Day celebrations of the Armed Forces Tribunal.
Armed Forces Tribunal:
Armed Forces Tribunal is a military tribunal in India.
It was established under the Armed Forces Tribunal Act, 2007.
The Principal Bench is located at Delhi.
There are ten other benches across the country.
It is the statutory body.
It is established to ensure the speedy and inexpensive justice to Ex-Servicemen, their families and War-Widows, besides the serving personnel of Armed Forces.
The Armed Forces Tribunal is empowered to adjudicate appeals against any order, decision, finding or sentence passed by a court-martial or any matter connected therewith or incidental thereto.
The tribunal is empowered to grant bail to an accused who is in military custody.
To adjudicate Disputes and complaints with respect to commission, appointments, enrolments and conditions of service in respect of persons subject to the Army Act, 1950, The Navy Act, 1957 and the Air Force Act, 1950.
Paramilitary forces including the Assam Rifles and Coast Guard are not considered to be a part of the Armed Forces Tribunal jurisdiction.
AFT is considered to be a criminal court with respect to Indian Penal Code, and Code of Criminal Procedure.
Appeals against the decision of the AFT can be taken only in Supreme Court. High Courts are not allowed to entertain such appeals.
