Why is in news? Dance drama based on the life of Raja Ram Mohan Roy to be organized under the theme 'Nari Samman' on Central Vista on 5th and 6th November
A dance drama based on the life of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who is called the father of modern Indian society, will be organized in the evening of 5th and 6th November, 2022 at Kartavya Path and India Gate (Central Vista).
Titled 'Yugpurush Raja Ram Mohan Roy', the program is based on the theme 'Nari Samman', which is being organisedby Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation.
A one-year long celebration was launched by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India on May 22, 2022, on the occasion of the 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
He is popularly remembered as the father of Indian renaissance.
Rabindranath Tagore referred to Ram Mohan as ‘a luminous star in the firmament of Indian history’.
He was born on 22 May, 1772 in Radhanagar (Bengal Presidency).
He represented Akbar II in England where he pleaded for his pension and allowances. Akbar II awarded him the title ‘Raja’.
Ram Mohan Roy was greatly influenced by western modern thought and stressed on rationalism and modern scientific approach.
Ram Mohan was attracted to Islamic monotheism. He said that monotheism is also the fundamental message of Vedanta.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a crusader of women rights.
He stood against the practice of Sati, The Abolition of Sati Act, 1829, was a result of R.R Mohan Roy’s efforts.
He pleaded for the right of inheritance and property for women.
He fought against polygamy, Purdah system and child marriage which were prevalent back then.
He supported women education as he believed that only education would fetch women equal social status with men.
He founded the Atmiya Sabha in 1814, the Calcutta Unitarian Association in 1821, and the Brahmo Sabha in 1828 which later became the Brahmo Samaj.
He campaigned against the caste system, untouchability, superstitions and use of intoxicants.
