The objective of the agreement is to centralize freight consolidation and reduce logistics costs from 14 percent to less than 10 percent of GDP at par with International Standards.

The tripartite agreement was signed by National Highways Logistics Management Limited NHLML, Inland Waterways Authority of India IWAI, and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited RVNL.

Multi Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP) will be a freight handling facility with rail and road accessibility, comprising container terminals, cargo terminals (bulk, break-bulk), warehouses, cold storage, facilities for mechanised material handling, and value-added services such as customs clearance with bonded storage yards, quarantine zones, testing facilities and warehousing management services, etc. along with other associated facilities.

The Government of India launched “Bharatmala Pariyojana”, a new umbrella program for the highways sector that focuses on optimizing the efficiency of road traffic movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps.

It is a centrally-sponsored and funded Road and Highways project of the Government of India.

The Bharatmala Pariyojana envisages development of about 26,000 km length of Economic Corridors, which along with Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and North-South and East-West (NS-EW) Corridors are expected to carry majority of the Freight Traffic on roads.

The ambitious umbrella programme will subsume all existing Highway Projects including the flagship National Highways Development Project (NHDP), launched by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998.

It is both enabler and beneficiary of other key Government of India schemes, such as Sagarmala, Dedicated Freight Corridors, Industrial corridors, UDAN-RCS, BharatNet, Digital India, Parvatmala and Make in India.
