Why is in news? Indian Navy's Nilgiri-class stealth frigate Taragiri to be launched September 11.

Indian Navy's indigenously designed Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigate Taragiri, it is under the Project 17A. It has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) for the Indian Navy, Mumbai.

Taragiri, a 149-metre-long and 17.8-metre-wide ship is propelled by a combination of two gas turbines and two main diesel engines which are designed to achieve a speed of over 28 knots at a displacement of around 6670 tonnes.

Taragiri has been built using integrated construction methodology, which involves hull blocks construction in different geographical locations and integration on the slipway at the MDL.

Others: INS Taragiri (F41) was a Nilgiri-class frigate of the Indian Navy. Taragiri was commissioned into the Navy on 16 May 1980 and was decommissioned on 27 June 2013 in Mumbai, after serving 33 years in the navy.
