National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) launched Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) in April 2017.

Worker Population Ratio
WPR is defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population.
Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR):
LFPR is defined as the percentage of persons in labour force (i.e. working or seeking or available for work)in the population
Age: 15-59 years
Unemployment Rate (UR):UR is defined as the percentage of persons unemployed among the persons in the labour force.
Labour Force- Persons working or seeking or available for work in the age group of 15-59.
Urban Report:
Three months once for the urban areas only in the ‘Current Weekly Status’ (CWS).
Reference Period of CWS- 7 Days
Annual Report : For both rural and urban areas- Usual Status (ps+ss) and CWS
Reference Period for Usual Status: 365 Days
Improvement in Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR)
All India LFPR – 57.9%
Among the population of 15-59 age group, 57.9 % of them are either workingor Seeking /Ready to work.
In rural areas, LFPR increased to 60.8% in 2022-23 from 50.7% in 2017-18
LFPR for urban areas increased to 50.4%. from 47.6% .
LFPR for male in India increased to 78.5% in 2022-23from 75.8% in 2017-18
LFPR for female was increased to 37.0%from 23.3%
Improvement in Worker Population Ratio.
Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in usual status (ps+ss) for persons of age 15 years and above – India- 56%
Among the population of above15 age group, 56% of them are working.
In rural areas, WPR increased from 48.1% in 2017-18 to 59.4% in 2022-23
Urban areas it increased from 43.9% to 47.7%.
WPR for male - increased from 71.2% in 2017-18 to 76.0% in 2022-23
WPR for female –Increased from 22.0% to 35.9%.
Decline in Unemployment Rate
Unemployment Rate (UR) in usual status (ps+ss) for persons of age 15 years and above- All India Level – 3.2%
3.2% of people in the Labour force are unemployed.
In rural areas, UR decreased from 5.3% in 2017-18 to 2.4% in 2022-23
Urban areas-UR decreased from 7.7% to 5.4%.
UR for male in India decreased from 6.1% in 2017-18 to 3.3% in 2022-23 and
UR for female –decreasedfrom 5.6% to 2.9%.
