India’s first tilapia parvovirus reported in Tamil Nadu.

The tilapia parvovirus (TiPV), affecting farm-bred tilapia fish, has been reported for the first time in India at ponds in Ranipet district.

It has been found for the first time in India at ponds in Walajah in Ranipet district.

It is causing a huge mortality rate

It is capable of surviving in low-oxygen levels.

It has become invasive across the country

Among the tilapia species, the Indian government had authorised the import of only Oreochromis niloticus in 1970 and red hybrids because of their fast growth and market demand.

In India, tilapia farming is carried out in different parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

The TiPV was first reported in China in 2019 and in Thailand in 2021. India is the third country to report its occurrence.
