Why in news?

Mount Semeru, located inEast Java,Indonesia, erupted on 15th December, spewing a thick column of white-to-grey ash rising up to1,000 meters into the sky.

This eruption prompted an aviation warning fromIndonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation,which issued an orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation.

Flight restrictions were placed within a 5-kilometer radius of the volcano.

About Mt Semeru volcano:

  • It is an active volcano inEast Java, Indonesia.
  • It is locatedin a subduction zone, where theIndo-Australia plate subductsunder the Eurasia plate.
  • It is thehighest mountainon the island of Java.
  • The name "Semeru" is derived from Meru, the central world mountain in Hinduism, or Sumeru, the abode of gods.
  • Indonesia sits on thePacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
