Why is in news? KRS, Kabini outflows to cross 300 tmcft: Karnataka centre
The dam was built across the river Kaveri and confluence with its tributaries Hemavati and Lakshmana Tirtha, in Karnataka.
It is the main source of water for the districts of Mysore.
The water is used for irrigation in Mysore and Mandya, and it is the main source of drinking water for all of Mysore, Mandya and almost the whole of Bengaluru city, the capital of Karnataka.
One of the interesting features of KRS Dam is that Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah used a mixture of limestone and brick powder, called as 'surkhi', instead of cement as usually used in construction of other dams.
The Kabini river is also one of the major tributary of river Kaveri. The Kabini dam is built across the river Kaveri, the dam is situated in Mysore.
