Why is in news? Cabinet approves construction of Shinku La Tunnel to provide all-weather connectivity in Ladakh
The Border Roads Organisation will construct the world's highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 feet to connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh.
This tunnel, to be completed by 2025, will change the economy of Zanskar Valley.
At present, one has to travel 101 kms from Manali to Darcha on Leh road and thereafter, take a turn from Darcha towards Shinku La Pass and enter Zanskar valley.
Project Yojak:
To speed up the border roads infrastructure works, especially strengthening the connectivity to Ladakh, the BRO has working under Ministry of Defence, has constituted a new project “Yojak”.
The main task of the project will be to build more tunnels like Atal Tunnel and maintain the connecting roads.
Yojak will not only be responsible for building high-altitude traffic tunnels on Manali-Ladakh axis but also will acquire major roads for maintenance that can be up to 500km in length.
A BRO official said Yojak was going to be a major project which would have many road construction companies working under it.
