Why is in news? 9 years of Modi govt: Defence Ministry launches ''SRIJAN'' Portal to promote Indigenisation in Defence sector
- As part of this vision, the Department of Defence Production has developed an indigenization portal the “SRIJAN” portal, which is a one-stop shop online portal that provides access to the vendors to take up items that can be taken up for indigenization.
- The “Srijan portal” was launched by Defence Minister in 2020, with a goal of self-reliance in Defence sector, providing opportunities for “Make in India” in Defence.
- On this portal, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) and Station Headquarters (SHQs) can display their items which they have been importing which the Indian Industry can design, develop and manufacture as per their capability or through joint venture.
- The comprehensive user-friendly 'dashboard' on the SRIJAN portal has been developed to monitor the status of progress of the indigenisation process.
- The government has said that defence imports have reduced from 46 per cent to 36.7 per cent since 2018-19. The government has notified four Positive Indigenisation Lists comprising 411 major weapons platforms and systems
- Over 26,000 defence items have been uploaded on SRIJAN Portal and offered to the Industry for indigenisation. So far more than 7000 items have already been indigenised, which cater to the domestic and global market.
- India being one of the largest importers of arms globally, the indigenisation of defence products through Srijan Portal is a major step towards self reliance in national security.
