Why in news?
Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 is the cleanliness drive by the Government of India for a clean and hygiene environment across the country.
It seeks to engage citizens, organisations and institutions in cleanliness activities in order to foster the spirit of owning up on issues of cleanliness
Background:
- On 15th August 2014, speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Hon’ble Prime Minister gave a clarion call for Swachhata to become a national priority and to achieve it through jan bhagidaari (People Participation).
- Subsequently, the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2nd October 2014 under a ‘Whole of Government’ approach, making sanitation ‘everyone’s business’.
- Thereafter, the whole world saw, as the nation came together and created what is known as the world’s largest jan andolan for swachhata.
Objectives:
- Give the site a clean and hygienic outlook
- Encourage people in the community to engage in cleanliness activities
- There is a need to give people information on the need to practise hygiene
Activities:
- Sustained cleanliness and sanitation crusades in general public areas, school compounds and other learning establishments
- Collection of waste starting from the homes for segregation
- Construction of toilets and sanitation centres
- Publicity through television, radio, newspapers and magazines, educational institutions, and Social activities
Theme:
The theme for 'Swachhata Hi Seva' 2024 is "Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskar Swachhata".
- It seeks to reignite the spirit of Indian Railways of collective action and citizen participation in cleanliness efforts across India.

Way Forward
Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 can prove to be a game-changer for the Indian scenario of cleanliness. To ensure its success:
- Increase Awareness: Inform people that clean and healthy food is critical to their lives.
- Improve Infrastructure: Ensure proper and effective provision and management of sanitation facilities and general waste Infrastructure.
- Encourage Participation: Encourage people’s involvement and participation in community activities.
- Ensure Sustainability: Establish ways of sustaining the gains that have been made in this area of clean environment.
In this way, India may clean its environment, so it will result in better and hygienic health standards of the people, safety of the environment and people’s productivity will increase because more people will be engaged in cleaning the environment.
