When Maharaja Abhay Singh of Marwar (Jodhpur) sent his men to cut down Khejri trees for the construction of his new palace, Amrita Devi stood in defiance.

She, along with363 other members of the Bishnoi community, sacrificed their lives to protect the trees, which they considered sacred.
